MAY 02, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Microsoft Corp. issued an unusual weekend security warning Saturday that a worm has been unleashed on the Internet taking advantage of a security hole announced publicly last month. Microsoft once again urged users to install its most recent critical Windows updates.
"Microsoft has verified that the worm exploits the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) issue addressed in Microsoft Security Update MS04-011 on April 13, 2004," the company said in an announcement posted yesterday and updated 3 a.m. PDT this morning. In its security update, Microsoft included a tool that checks for system infection by the Sasser worm.
Versions of Windows XP and 2000 are vulnerable, although not XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003, Microsoft said.
Some users may be reluctant to apply the patches, however, since there have been reports that the fixes create new system problems, such as causing some systems to slow down or stop responding.

Beware! a most dangerous bug may pack up your PC. Experts have warned computer users about the new virus, which launches an automatic attack.
According to This is London, up to now most viruses have infected a PC only if the user opened an e-mail and then an attachment inside. However, Netsky-V starts to infect the computer when the user clicks on the subject line of the e-mail.
The experts said the arrival of a worm of this type poses the greatest danger to home users, who are less likely than businesses to have the right anti-virus software installed. Internet security firm Sophos first detected the worm on Wednesday. It has been found in e-mails with the subject lines "mail delivery sytem failure", "mail delivery failed", "server system failure" and "gateway system failure".
Sophos believes the virus could be intended to bring down file- sharing websites by using infected computers to launch a 'denial of service' attack

Microsoft Corp. warned yesterday that it had identified a host of new security flaws in its software, some of which would allow hackers to remotely commandeer vulnerable computers, and it urged users to install a series of fixes to address the problem.
Microsoft rated three of the four security bulletins as critical, requiring prompt attention. The fourth it rated important. It said the critical bulletins alone accounted for 20 vulnerabilities in various versions of the company's Windows software.
The Web site http://www.microsoft.com/security/ leads users through the steps they need to follow to download and install the updates. Patches are available for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 and newer releases, including Windows Me and XP.

Due to Sly's absence and his eventual leaving to work on ICT, Swarf.net will no longer be creating or supporting hacks for ikonboard.
Since Perl is a harder, less forgiving, complicated and less favored language Swarf.net will be moving to create hacks for the simpler and more popluar PHP boards. In the coming weeks the database here will be deleted to make room for our new PHP hacks.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope you will join us in this move. If you choose not to, that is ok too. There is plenty of PHP lovers out there!
Thank you, The Swarf.net Team
