TITLE: Cookie setup AUTHOR hate98 & kturby
In the AdminCP -> Board Options set the following
CookieID - set a prefix (do not leave it blank) - a few characters, maybe your forum name abbreviation Cookie Path - set to "/" (slash, signifying root) Cookie Domain - set to ".yourdomain.com" (include period in the front, example: .foobar.com) Length of user sessions after log in - example 172800 (in seconds, 3600 seconds = 1 hr)
But you're not done yet. If you update any of these things after users start logging in this will affect users login since cookies are stored on their browsers and you're changing things...
So next do this if you make changes "on the fly"....
1) Ask users who have any trouble to delete their cookies using their browser menu - do NOT use the link on your forum because it only affects cookies with the ID/path/domain currently configured plus it only sets cookie values to "-" and does not truly make them go away.
2) Reset sessions -> All Users regardless of time
Then just let people log back in.
Do not keep playing with cookie settings, that only makes it worse. Use the above settings, ask users to delete old cookies, and things will start working better.
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT COOKIES, PLEASE READ:
Remember, cookies are stored on the user's hard disk, your forum only tells the browser to create/delete cookies and affect the values. No cookie data is stored in your own database. Cookies sometimes simply have to be deleted to make them work, it's an imperfect process.
Also, if an office lan or proxy setup forces everyone in an office to use one shared IP and they all visit your forum, this can result in only showing one of them as an active user, but they should all remain online. This single shared IP can confuse how data is written to active_sessions.db and there is no solution to this in a cookie based system as of yet. Hashmarks is one possibility, but thus far it's not been implement in 3.0.2 of iB. FYI only.

Make sure your local cookie settings aren't preventing ikonboard from storing on your system: For example, in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options. On the privacy tab, click Edit... In the next screen, put in the domain for your ikonboard in the address of web site field (i.e. example.com). Then click on Always Allow. This way, you can keep ultra tight cookie controls and still have your ikonboard cookies! Also flush your cookies both in your browser and from the "Remove Cookies" link on the bottom of your message board page. Note that the automatic setting of icons to read status doesn't happen instantly. You have to leave the browser/message board session long enough for the iB session to expire.
